What does college look and feel like?
It is hard to describe to a young student what a college looks and feels like, so NEW FUTURES takes students on an excursion to experience college first-hand!
College for a Day has provided 6th graders with hands-on activities at nearby college campuses since 1998. The college visit is complete with campus tours, classroom visits, hands-on activities, and discussions with faculty and college students.
College for a Day encourages students to think about their future at a younger age. The program helps to plant the idea that attending college is attainable and it strengthens students’ knowledge of post-secondary opportunities. This is also an opportunity for these future college students to become interested in a college near their own community.
Classroom resources are available for teachers and students to prepare for the experience. NEW FUTURES also provides resources for students to discuss planning for college with their parents.
"College access remains an unrealized dream for millions of students worldwide. The College for a Day program is designed to promote opportunities to students to demonstrate they can be successful in achieving a college education."
- Catherine Blades, Manager, NEW FUTURES
Post-Visit Resources
While College for a Day is beneficial in itself to the participating students, it is only one part of a broader strategy to get them motivated and equipped for the pursuit of a post secondary education. NEW FUTURES provides an age-appropriate curriculum to help teachers work with their 6th graders.
Teachers can use the college awareness curriculum either prior to or following the College for a Day event. It includes lesson plans for the areas of Language Arts, Science, Math, and Social Studies, all correlated to Wyoming State Standards.
